- The call
- You moved in three months ago. The door works, but nobody can say how old the springs are, when anyone last looked at it, or whether the little sensors by the floor have ever been tested.

An inspection separates looking from fixing on purpose. Springs, cables, drums and bottom brackets hold the door's weight as stored tension, so the technician examines them closely, measures what can be measured and photographs what matters, without loosening or winding anything. Once the findings are written down, any adjustment or repair becomes its own planned job, done with the door secured and the stored spring tension controlled by whichever method that system calls for. This order protects the hardware as much as the people around it, and it means the report describes the door as it actually is rather than as it was left after a hurried tweak.

Scene 1
Turning to the opener, the technician checks that the motor head is secure on its hangers, the rail is straight and its header bracket firmly fixed, and the curved arm meets the door at a bracket that is bolted to a reinforced section rather than thin steel. The chain, belt or screw drive is looked at for slack or wear. The photo eyes are located, their height above the floor noted, their lenses and wiring checked, and the wall control, remotes, keypad and lock or vacation button are each identified so they can be tested in turn. This is also where the manual release cord and handle are confirmed to be within reach and in working order.
Scene 2
The opener is reconnected and a flat 2x4 offcut is laid on the floor across the centre of the opening. The door is sent down from the wall control. On meeting the board it should stop and reverse to fully open on its own. If it stalls on the board, pushes against it, or only reverses after a long pause, the opener's down-force or travel limit needs attention and the finding goes in the report. Older openers without photo eyes are tested this way too, and their behaviour is recorded against the test the maker specifies. The board is used every time; a hand or foot never stands in for it.
Scene 3
A few things are worth a call the day you notice them: a door that hangs crooked or stops part-way; a cable that looks slack, frayed or wrapped where it should not be; a gap in a torsion spring coil; a door that suddenly feels heavy on the manual release; an opener that reverses for no reason after the photo eyes are wiped; or a deep dent, one from an impact, or one dragging in the track. In each case, leave the door as it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and use another door until it has been looked at. A small cosmetic dent that leaves the door running smoothly can wait for the planned appointment.

The route is the same and the counterbalance looks different. Extension springs stretch beside the horizontal tracks and pull through pulleys, so the technician examines each spring for stretch and a broken end, each pulley for a grooved wheel or a seized bearing, the cable clips, and whether a containment cable runs through the centre of each spring. Balance, reversal and photo-eye tests are unchanged.
Most often it is the photo eyes. A sensor knocked slightly out of line, a lens with a film of road grime, a loose wire, or low afternoon sun shining straight into one eye will each break the beam as far as the opener is concerned. The next candidates are a down-force setting that has drifted, a binding roller or a door that has gone out of balance. The inspection checks each in turn.
A door that still runs after a bump can still be carrying the effects of it. The force travels from the dent into the roller, the track, the bottom bracket and the cable on that side, and any of them can be nudged enough to change how the door hangs. An inspection follows that path and tells you whether the mark is cosmetic, whether a part needs work, or whether the balance has shifted.
