Repair & Maintenance
Is the inspection different for an older detached garage with springs along the tracks?
The route is the same and the counterbalance looks different. Extension springs stretch beside the horizontal tracks and pull through pulleys, so the technician examines each spring for stretch and a broken end, each pulley for a grooved wheel or a seized bearing, the cable clips, and whether a containment cable runs through the centre of each spring. Balance, reversal and photo-eye tests are unchanged. Garage Door Safety Inspection
What should I do if the bottom seal freezes to the floor?
Do not keep pressing the button; the opener can tear the seal or pull the top section out of shape. Free the seal by clearing the ice along the threshold, with warm water poured on the concrete rather than the door, or by working a plastic scraper along the seal. Then treat the seal with a silicone spray. Keeping snow and meltwater cleared from the threshold and keeping the seal flexible with silicone prevents most repeats. Garage Door Tune-Up
Can I keep using the opener until someone comes?
It is better to leave the opener alone. A racked door does not become straighter with another cycle; every press of the button forces the crooked sections deeper into the rails and strains the hinges and wall brackets. Unplug the opener or pull the red release cord if the door is fully closed, keep people and vehicles clear, and let the technician move it in a controlled way. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
How should I look after the door after the section is replaced?
A little routine goes a long way. Each month, look along the hinges for loose screws, spin the rollers, and check the door's balance by lifting it by hand with the opener disconnected. Twice a year, apply a light garage-door lubricant to hinge pivots, roller stems and springs, and keep the tracks clean and dry. Rinse salt off the lower sections in spring, touch up chips, and keep the bottom seal clear of ice in winter. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Why does the door shake as it rounds the curve of the track?
The curve is where each roller changes direction under load, so it exposes wear that straight travel hides. A wheel worn oval or flat-spotted bumps as it turns the corner, a wobbling stem lets the section lean back as it enters the horizontal run, and a track whose radius has been knocked out of shape pinches or drops the wheel for an instant. Fresh rollers of the right size in a track that has been checked for shape and spacing usually take the shudder away. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Are hinges on a wood door different?
The hinges themselves are the same numbered galvanized parts, but the fastening changes. Wood stiles take lag screws or carriage bolts with nuts and washers rather than self-drilling metal screws, and the timber's condition matters as much as the hinge. Softened or split wood around the holes is filled, reinforced or bridged with a backer plate before the hinge goes back on, so the new hardware bites into something solid. Does a new piece of track have to match the rest of the set?
It does. Profile, gauge and radius all need to agree so a roller passes from old track to new without a step, and so both sides carry the door the same way. A two-inch track cannot mix with three-inch hardware, and a 12-inch curve beside a 15-inch one leaves the door meeting the horizontal run at two different heights. The technician measures the existing track and orders to it rather than to a general size. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
Why should the bottom brackets never be loosened by hand?
The bottom bracket is where the cable attaches, so whenever the springs are wound it carries a share of the door's weight as tension. Loosening it while the counterbalance is loaded releases that tension all at once. Many manufacturers now fit tamper-resistant fasteners for this reason. The technician unloads the springs first, after which the bracket is just a piece of hardware to unbolt and replace. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Why does the door stop just above the floor and reverse?
Two usual reasons. The travel limit is set a fraction too long, so the door reaches the slab, meets it harder than expected and interprets that as an obstruction. Or the bottom seal has stiffened or frozen and the last few centimetres take more force than the setting allows. Both are adjusted after the door is checked for balance, and the fix is confirmed by closing the door several times and running the contact reversal test. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
Why is there white or grey dust on top of my opener?
Those are shavings from the plastic drive gear inside the head. The gear meshes with a steel worm on the motor shaft, and when it wears the teeth flake off and collect under the cover. Once you see shavings the gear is close to stripping, after which the motor runs and the door stays still. Replacing the gear and sprocket assembly before that happens turns a stranded morning into a planned repair. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
Why is the door tested by hand before the belt is touched?
Because the belt guides the door; the springs carry it. A door that lifts with moderate effort and stays put a metre off the floor is balanced, and a belt on that door lasts. A door that drops or drifts is loading the belt, trolley and sprocket far beyond their design, so a new belt would wear the same way. Spring work comes first in that case. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Is battery backup worth having?
For many households it is the feature they value most, especially where ice storms and winter outages are part of life. A backup battery inside or beside the head unit runs the door for a number of cycles when the power is off, so you can get the car out or put it away without heaving the door up by hand in the dark. The head unit chirps or lights an indicator when the battery needs renewing, which is every few years. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Can I choose a different colour and panel style?
Replacement is an opportunity to select the exterior design as part of the order. Panel profiles, factory colours, window patterns and decorative details vary by product line. Samples and current literature help compare them in the building's actual light. Mechanical details are then specified around the completed door rather than separately from its appearance. How do I operate the door during a power outage?
At handover, the installer demonstrates the operator's emergency release and the safe handle or gripping point for manual movement. The exact sequence follows the operator instructions. Once released, a balanced door can be raised and lowered by hand with controlled effort. Reconnection is also shown, and remotes are kept aside until the mechanism is properly engaged again. Why does the technician inspect the jambs and framing?
Door loads travel through the tracks and brackets into the jambs, then into the building structure. Soft wood, split material, loose blocking, shallow anchors, or unsupported trim can interrupt that path. Inspecting the mounting surfaces shows whether ordinary preparation is sufficient or whether structural work should be coordinated before the new system is attached. How should I prepare the garage before installation?
Move vehicles outside and clear stored items from the door, side tracks, ceiling path and opener area. Provide access to wall controls and the electrical receptacle, and protect belongings that are sensitive to normal installation dust. Exterior access in front of the opening should also be open. Mention alarms, interior finishes or fragile landscaping that affect how the work area is arranged. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
